Xlear Nasal Spray combines pharmaceutical-grade xylitol with saline (salt water) to provide superior nasal cleansing and moisturising compared to saline alone. Xylitol works synergistically with saline by pulling additional moisture into nasal tissues (osmotic effect) and — uniquely — inhibiting the adhesion of bacteria and allergens to nasal mucosal cells, making them easier to clear. The result is cleaner, better-moisturised nasal passages with improved protection against bacterial colonisation and allergen exposure.
Xylitol is uniquely effective in nasal sprays because it inhibits bacteria from adhering to the nasal epithelium — the same mechanism by which xylitol reduces tooth decay (bacteria can't stick to xylitol-coated surfaces). This means bacteria and allergens are more easily washed out of the nasal passages rather than taking hold. Saline alone provides mechanical rinsing; xylitol adds anti-adhesion protection.
Yes. Xlear is safe for daily use — it contains no decongestants or medications, just xylitol, saline, and grapefruit seed extract. It can be used as often as needed, including multiple times per day during hayfever season, illness, or for daily nasal hygiene maintenance.
Xlear's xylitol inhibits bacterial adhesion, which may help reduce bacterial load during and between sinus infections. It is not a treatment for established sinus infections but may help maintain sinus health and reduce recurrence as part of an overall sinus hygiene routine. See your doctor for diagnosed sinusitis.
Yes. Xlear is safe for children and is widely used by parents for children's nasal hygiene. The gentle formula is suitable from infancy. Check the label for age-specific dosing or nozzle tips for young children.
Yes — using Xlear 5–10 minutes before a steroid nasal spray clears the nasal passages of mucus and debris, allowing the medication to reach the nasal mucosa more effectively. This is the same principle as using saline before a steroid spray.
