Pharmexa UV Guard MAX is a specially formulated, highly effective combination sunscreen providing SPF 50+ broad-spectrum UVA and UVB protection in a smooth, easily applied lotion. UV Guard MAX uses a combination of UV filter actives to achieve maximum sun protection — suitable for everyday outdoor use, sun-exposed activities, and for people requiring dependable sun protection for skin health and cancer prevention. 100ml lotion.
SPF (Sun Protection Factor) 50+ blocks approximately 98% of UVB radiation — compared to 97% for SPF 50 and 93% for SPF 30. In New Zealand and Australia, SPF 50+ is the maximum sun protection rating available in consumer sunscreens. Given New Zealand's high UV index (some of the highest in the world), SPF 50+ is the recommended minimum for outdoor sun protection.
UVB rays cause sunburn and direct DNA damage — they are the primary cause of skin cancer. UVA rays penetrate more deeply into the skin, causing premature ageing, collagen breakdown, and contributing to melanoma risk. Broad-spectrum sunscreens protect against both UVA and UVB. Check for PA+ rating or broad-spectrum labelling to confirm UVA protection.
Most people significantly under-apply sunscreen. For adequate SPF 50+ protection, you need approximately 2mg per cm² of skin — equivalent to about 1 teaspoon for the face and neck, and 6 teaspoons (30ml) for the whole body. Apply 20 minutes before sun exposure and reapply every 2 hours and after swimming, towelling, or sweating.
Yes. The lotion texture is suitable for face and body application. For daily facial use, many people prefer a lighter formulation — check the current product for skin feel and suitability for your skin type.
Yes. New Zealand has one of the highest UV radiation levels in the world — up to 40% higher than comparable latitudes in Europe. The thinner ozone layer over New Zealand and the southern hemisphere, combined with the earth's closer proximity to the sun in summer, results in intense UV radiation. Wearing SPF 50+ daily is especially important in New Zealand.
