The USL 14" Fixed Moon Boot is a clinical-grade lower limb immobilisation device recommended for stress fractures of the lower leg, stable fractures, metatarsal fractures, and soft tissue injuries requiring foot and ankle immobilisation during healing and mobilisation. The cushioned inner and outer sole absorbs shock from heel strike, improving patient comfort during weight-bearing activity. The hook-and-loop closure allows easy adjustment for swelling changes throughout the recovery period. Washable liner for hygiene. Note: processing and handling typically take 3–5 working days. Available in X-Small through XX-Large.
Fixed moon boots (also called walking boots or CAM walkers) are used for: stress fractures of the foot and lower leg, stable ankle fractures, metatarsal fractures (foot bone fractures — often from dropping something or a twisting injury), severe ankle sprains, Achilles tendon injuries or post-surgical immobilisation, plantar fasciitis (in severe cases), and post-surgical foot and lower leg protection. Your orthopaedic surgeon, GP, or physiotherapist will specify whether a boot is appropriate and for how long.
14 inch refers to the shaft height of the boot — measuring 14 inches (approximately 35cm) up the leg from the base, providing good lower leg and ankle immobilisation. 'Fixed' means the ankle is held in a neutral, non-articulating position — the sole does not flex or allow ankle movement. This distinguishes it from 'hinged' or 'articulating' moon boots that allow controlled ankle range of motion during rehabilitation. Fixed boots are used for fractures and early-stage healing requiring complete immobilisation.
Moon boot sizing is based on shoe size. Check the USL sizing chart — X-Small suits approximately US Women's 4–6, Small US Women's 6–8 / Men's 4–6, Medium US Women's 8–10 / Men's 6–8, Large US Women's 10–12 / Men's 8–10, X-Large Men's 10–12, XX-Large Men's 12+. When in doubt, size up for comfort, particularly if you have significant swelling.
Yes — the moon boot is designed for weight-bearing walking (unless your doctor has specified non-weight-bearing). The rocker sole design facilitates a rolling gait pattern. Many people find it helpful to wear a shoe of similar height on the opposite foot to level the hips and reduce back strain from the height difference. A physiotherapist can advise on gait modification for comfortable moon boot walking.
Duration depends entirely on your diagnosis. Metatarsal stress fractures typically require 4–6 weeks. Ankle fractures 6–8 weeks. Achilles tendon injuries 6–12 weeks depending on severity. Follow your surgeon's or GP's specific protocol — do not remove the boot or progress weight-bearing ahead of your prescribed timeline as this risks re-injury or non-union of healing bone.
