Solgar Standardised Valerian Root Extract provides a concentrated, standardised extract of Valeriana officinalis — one of the most extensively studied herbal remedies for sleep difficulty and anxiety. Valerian has been used in European traditional medicine for centuries as a gentle, non-addictive sleep support and nervous system calmer. Solgar's standardised extract ensures consistent potency of active valerenic acids for reliable therapeutic effect. 60 capsules.
Valerian's primary active compounds — valerenic acids and isovaleric acid — increase GABA availability in the brain. Valerenic acid inhibits the enzymatic breakdown of GABA and acts directly on GABAA receptors, producing sedative and anxiolytic effects similar to benzodiazepines but through a gentler, partial mechanism without the dependency or tolerance issues. Valerian also interacts with serotonin and adenosine receptors involved in sleep regulation.
Unlike pharmaceutical sleeping tablets that work immediately, valerian typically requires 2–4 weeks of consistent nightly use before meaningful improvement in sleep onset and quality is observed. For best results, take consistently every evening rather than sporadically. Some people notice effects sooner — individual response varies.
Yes — valerian and lemon balm is one of the most studied herbal sleep combinations. The two herbs work through complementary mechanisms (valerian primarily through GABA/valerenic acid; lemon balm through GABA transaminase inhibition and rosmarinic acid) and several clinical trials show the combination is more effective than either herb alone for sleep quality improvement.
At recommended doses, valerian is generally not associated with significant next-day sedation — a key advantage over pharmaceutical sleep medications. Some people do experience mild morning grogginess initially. If this occurs, try a lower dose or take the supplement 1–2 hours before bed rather than immediately before sleeping.
Valerian has an excellent long-term safety profile and is not associated with dependency or tolerance. It can be used consistently as part of an ongoing sleep support routine. However, like all herbal supplements, periodic breaks (e.g. 1–2 weeks off every 2–3 months) are traditionally recommended. Not recommended during pregnancy without medical advice.
