Seeking Health Niacin provides niacin (nicotinic acid) as a bioavailable B3 supplement. Niacin is essential for NAD+ production (critical for energy metabolism, DNA repair and cellular longevity), cholesterol metabolism, and methylation cycle function through its interaction with the HNMT enzyme.
Niacin (B3) is essential for NAD+ and NADP+ coenzymes involved in hundreds of metabolic reactions. Clinical evidence supports niacin's role in maintaining healthy cholesterol levels (raising HDL), supporting energy metabolism, DNA repair, and as a precursor for NAD+ which plays a role in healthy ageing.
The nicotinic acid form can cause a temporary, harmless flush — redness, warmth and tingling of the skin — particularly at higher doses. This can be minimised by taking with food, starting with a low dose, or taking aspirin 30 minutes before. Flush is not caused by niacinamide.
Niacin flush can involve histamine release from mast cells. Those with histamine intolerance or MCAS may experience stronger flush reactions. Consider starting with very low doses and increasing gradually, or discuss with your practitioner.
Niacin is a methyl consumer — it uses up methyl groups when cleared by the liver. This makes it useful for those who are overmethylated, explaining why high-dose niacin is sometimes used therapeutically to reduce excess methyl group accumulation.
