Multichem Travel Relief contains meclozine hydrochloride 12.5mg — an effective antihistamine antiemetic (anti-nausea and anti-vomiting) that specifically targets the vestibular system to prevent and relieve motion sickness. Meclozine acts on the vomiting centre and the vestibular nucleus in the brain, reducing the nausea, vomiting, and dizziness triggered by motion during car, sea, or air travel. Pharmacist Only Medicine (Rx-S2). 12 tablets per pack.
Motion sickness occurs when conflicting sensory signals from the eyes, inner ear (vestibular system), and body proprioceptors create confusion in the vomiting centre of the brainstem. Meclozine acts as an H1 antihistamine that blocks histamine receptors in the vestibular nucleus and the vomiting centre (area postrema), reducing the sensitivity of these centres to conflicting motion signals and suppressing the nausea, vomiting, and dizziness response.
Take 1–2 tablets (12.5–25mg) approximately 1 hour before travel begins. Meclozine has a slower onset than some other motion sickness medications but a longer duration (12–24 hours) — making it more suitable for longer journeys. For overnight sea or air travel, take before departure rather than waiting until symptoms develop.
Meclozine can cause mild drowsiness in some people, but is generally considered one of the less sedating antihistamine motion sickness medications. Avoid driving or operating heavy machinery until you know how meclozine affects you. The mild sedation can actually be beneficial on long flights or overnight travel where sleep is desirable.
This product is labelled for adults and children aged 12 years and over. For younger children with motion sickness, consult your pharmacist about age-appropriate alternatives. Children aged 6–11 may be suitable candidates for lower doses — your pharmacist can advise.
Hyoscine (scopolamine/Kwells) acts on the muscarinic acetylcholine receptors in the vomiting centre — it works faster (30 minutes onset) but has more anticholinergic side effects (dry mouth, blurred vision, urinary retention). Meclozine works via histamine receptors, has a slower onset but longer duration, and is generally better tolerated for longer journeys. Both are effective; choice depends on journey duration and individual tolerance.
