NOW L-Methionine provides 500mg of L-methionine per capsule — an essential sulphur-containing amino acid that the body cannot synthesise and must obtain from diet or supplementation. Methionine is a key methyl donor in the methylation cycle (SAMe pathway), a precursor to cysteine, taurine, and glutathione (the body's primary antioxidant), essential for liver detoxification, and a component of cartilage and connective tissue. GMP certified, non-GMO, vegan.
L-Methionine has several critical roles: it is converted to SAMe (S-adenosylmethionine) — the body's primary methyl donor involved in over 200 biochemical reactions including neurotransmitter synthesis, DNA methylation, and gene expression. It also converts to cysteine (which forms glutathione, the master antioxidant) and taurine (important for bile acid conjugation, heart function, and nervous system). It is a key amino acid for liver detoxification phase II processing.
People who may benefit include vegans and vegetarians (methionine is most abundant in animal proteins), those with elevated homocysteine levels (which can indicate impaired methylation), people with liver stress or sluggish detoxification, those with connective tissue or joint conditions requiring sulphur amino acids, and people with conditions related to impaired glutathione production.
No — L-Methionine is the amino acid precursor from which SAMe is made in the body. SAMe (S-adenosylmethionine) is the active methyl-donating form. Taking L-Methionine provides the building block; the body converts it to SAMe as needed. SAMe supplements provide the active form directly — both approaches support methylation, but SAMe is more direct for specific therapeutic applications like depression or liver disease.
In excess, methionine metabolism can raise homocysteine — a cardiovascular risk factor. To support safe methionine metabolism, ensure adequate B6, B12, and folate, which direct homocysteine toward beneficial pathways (glutathione and cysteine) rather than allowing it to accumulate. Standard supplemental doses (500mg) are generally safe when these B vitamins are adequate.
Take on an empty stomach 30 minutes before meals for best absorption — amino acids compete with each other for intestinal transport and are better absorbed without other dietary protein. Can be taken once or twice daily depending on your needs and healthcare provider's guidance.
