KP24 Rapid is an innovative head lice treatment formulated to kill head lice and their eggs (nits). Unlike older insecticide-based treatments (to which head lice can develop resistance), KP24 Rapid uses a physical mode of action — coating the lice and eggs in a suffocating film that physically blocks their respiratory system, providing effective treatment regardless of insecticide resistance status. 150ml.
KP24 Rapid uses a dimethicone-based physical treatment mechanism — the silicone oil (dimethicone) coats head lice and their eggs in a film that penetrates their respiratory system and disrupts water regulation, causing death by suffocation and dehydration rather than by neurotoxic insecticide action. This physical mechanism means lice cannot develop resistance, making it effective even where traditional insecticide treatments (permethrin, malathion) have failed due to resistance.
Apply to dry hair. Work through from scalp to tips ensuring complete coverage. Leave on for the time specified on the label (typically 15 minutes). Rinse thoroughly. Comb through wet hair with a fine-toothed nit comb to remove dead lice and eggs. A second treatment 7 days later kills any lice that hatched from eggs after the first treatment. Wash bedding, hats, and hair accessories used within the 48 hours before treatment.
Only treat people who are confirmed to have live lice on close inspection — do not treat prophylactically. Check all household members and close contacts carefully using a nit comb on wet, conditioned hair. Only those with confirmed live lice require treatment.
Head lice treatments — even highly effective ones — may not kill 100% of eggs. Any surviving eggs hatch within 7–10 days. A second treatment at day 7–10 kills the newly hatched lice before they mature and lay new eggs, breaking the cycle completely. Skipping the second treatment is the most common reason for treatment failure.
Current NZ and Australian public health guidelines recommend that children can return to school/daycare after the first treatment is completed — they do not need to wait until all eggs are gone. The old 'no nit' policy has been abandoned as it causes unnecessary absences. Confirm your specific school's policy, as individual policies may vary.
