Go Healthy Evening Primrose Oil 1000mg provides a high-quality source of Gamma-Linolenic Acid (GLA) — an omega-6 fatty acid that the body uses to produce anti-inflammatory prostaglandins. GLA from evening primrose oil is particularly valued for its role in supporting skin health, reducing hormonal skin conditions (such as PMS-related breakouts), promoting healthy hair and nails and supporting hormonal balance in women.
220 capsules per pack. Available from Pakuranga Pharmacy.
A: Gamma-Linolenic Acid (GLA) is an omega-6 fatty acid that the body normally produces from dietary linoleic acid. However, some people — particularly those with inflammatory conditions, hormonal imbalances, or dietary insufficiency — have impaired conversion. Evening primrose oil is one of the richest plant sources of pre-formed GLA, bypassing the conversion step and providing GLA directly for anti-inflammatory prostaglandin production.
A: GLA from evening primrose oil helps restore and maintain the integrity of the skin's lipid barrier — the outermost protective layer that prevents moisture loss and shields against irritants. Conditions like eczema, psoriasis and dry skin are often associated with impaired skin lipid production. Supplementing with GLA can help restore this barrier, reducing dryness, irritation and inflammatory skin symptoms.
A: Some research supports the use of GLA (from evening primrose oil) for reducing PMS symptoms including breast tenderness, mood changes and bloating. GLA's anti-inflammatory properties and role in prostaglandin regulation may help moderate the hormonal inflammatory response that contributes to PMS. Results vary — consistent supplementation over 2–3 menstrual cycles is generally needed to assess benefit.
A: Evening primrose oil should be used with caution during pregnancy — particularly in the first and second trimesters — as it may stimulate uterine contractions in some cases. While some midwives use it in the final weeks of pregnancy to support cervical ripening, this should only be done under medical supervision. Always consult your midwife or doctor before taking any supplement during pregnancy.
