Gaviscon Peppermint Tablets provide fast, soothing, and long-lasting relief from heartburn (gastric reflux) and indigestion. When swallowed, Gaviscon forms a raft on top of stomach contents, creating a physical barrier that prevents stomach acid from rising into the oesophagus. Unlike antacids that neutralise all stomach acid, Gaviscon specifically targets reflux — making it suitable for use after meals and at bedtime.
Antacids neutralise stomach acid throughout the stomach. Gaviscon works differently — it forms a gel raft on top of stomach contents that physically blocks acid from rising into the oesophagus. This makes Gaviscon particularly effective for reflux symptoms rather than general indigestion.
Gaviscon works best when taken after meals and at bedtime — times when acid reflux is most likely to occur. Take 2–4 tablets after meals and at bedtime as needed, or as directed by your pharmacist or doctor.
Gaviscon is generally considered safe during pregnancy for heartburn relief and is often recommended as a first-line option. However, consult your midwife or doctor before using any medication during pregnancy.
Gaviscon tablets are formulated for adults and children over 12. For infants with reflux, Gaviscon Infant sachets are specifically designed — these are a different formulation. Consult your doctor or Plunket nurse for infant reflux advice.
Gaviscon may affect the absorption of some other medications. Take other medications at least 2 hours before or after Gaviscon. If you are on regular prescription medication, consult your pharmacist before use.
