Gaia Herbs Valerian Root delivers a proprietary blend of fresh Valerian root and standardised Valerian root extract — providing both the full-spectrum phytochemicals and measured Valerenic acid content for consistent sleep and relaxation support. Valerian is one of the most widely used and studied herbs for promoting restful sleep and easing nervous tension.
Directions: Adults take 2 capsules 1 hour before bed.
Cautions: Not for use during pregnancy or lactation. Do not combine with alcohol or sedative medications. Avoid driving after use. Consult your healthcare practitioner before use.
Valerian Root works primarily by enhancing GABA activity in the brain — the same calming neurotransmitter pathway targeted by benzodiazepine sleep medications, but through a gentler herbal mechanism. Valerenic acid (the key active compound) inhibits the breakdown of GABA, promoting relaxation and drowsiness without the dependency risk of pharmaceutical sleeping aids.
Valerian can have a mild acute effect on the night it is taken, but research shows that cumulative benefits improve with 2–4 weeks of consistent nightly use. Take 2 capsules 1 hour before bed each night for best results.
At the recommended dose of 2 capsules before bed, most people do not experience next-day grogginess with Valerian. Start with a lower dose (1 capsule) if you are new to Valerian, and increase to 2 capsules once you have assessed your individual response.
Valerian has traditional use for daytime anxiety and nervous tension at lower doses. However, its relaxing and mildly sedating properties mean it is best taken in the evening. If you wish to use Valerian for daytime stress relief, start with a lower dose (1 capsule) and assess the effect on alertness before driving or operating machinery.
