Doctor's Best SAM-e (S-Adenosyl-L-Methionine) is the body's premier methyl donor — a naturally occurring compound involved in over 100 biochemical reactions including neurotransmitter synthesis, liver detoxification, and cartilage proteoglycan production. SAM-e is used clinically across Europe (as a prescription medicine in several countries) for mood support, liver health, and joint comfort. Doctor's Best uses pharmaceutical-grade, enteric-coated SAM-e tablets to protect the compound from stomach acid degradation. Available in 200mg and 400mg (double strength) doses.*
Suggested Use: Take on an empty stomach. 200mg: 1–2 tablets daily. 400mg: 1 tablet daily. Start low and increase gradually.
SAM-e (S-Adenosylmethionine) is a naturally occurring molecule produced by every cell in the body from the amino acid methionine and ATP. It is the body's primary methyl donor, providing methyl groups for reactions that produce serotonin, dopamine, and norepinephrine — the three key mood-regulating neurotransmitters. Clinical trials have shown SAM-e to be as effective as some antidepressants for mood support, with a more favourable side-effect profile and faster onset.*
SAM-e is highly unstable in the acidic environment of the stomach and will be rapidly degraded before it can be absorbed if exposed to gastric acid. Enteric coating protects the tablet from stomach acid, allowing it to pass through to the more alkaline small intestine where SAM-e is stable and can be properly absorbed. Always take SAM-e on an empty stomach for optimal absorption.*
Yes. SAM-e supports joint health by providing methyl groups needed for the synthesis of proteoglycans — the structural molecules in cartilage that maintain its cushioning and lubricating properties. Multiple clinical trials have shown SAM-e to be comparable to NSAIDs for joint comfort and mobility, with the advantage of being better tolerated and providing the additional mood and liver benefits that NSAIDs do not.*
The 200mg dose is suitable for those new to SAM-e or seeking mood and liver support at a standard maintenance dose. The 400mg double-strength tablet provides a higher single-tablet dose for those seeking more intensive support for joint comfort or liver health, or for those who have built up their dose over time. It is generally recommended to start with the lower dose and increase gradually, as some people experience mild digestive discomfort when starting SAM-e.
