Doctor's Best R-Lipoic Acid with BioEnhanced® Na-RALA 100mg delivers the R-enantiomer of alpha-lipoic acid — the biologically active form that occurs naturally in the body — stabilised as the sodium salt (Na-RALA) using a patented BioEnhanced® process. Unlike racemic ALA (which contains 50% biologically inactive S-form) or unstabilised R-ALA (which degrades rapidly at body temperature), BioEnhanced® Na-RALA remains stable and provides superior bioavailability of the naturally occurring R-form.*
Suggested Use: As a dietary supplement, take 1 capsule daily with a meal.
Standard alpha-lipoic acid supplements contain a 50/50 racemic mixture of R-ALA and S-ALA. The body naturally produces only the R-form, and only R-ALA is recognised by the enzymes that incorporate it into mitochondrial energy complexes. S-ALA is biologically inactive and may even compete with R-ALA for absorption. Pure R-ALA provides the same functional dose at half the total ALA content — meaning 100mg of R-ALA is functionally equivalent to ~200mg of standard racemic ALA.*
Pure R-ALA powder is notoriously unstable — it polymerises rapidly when exposed to heat (including body temperature), forming inactive aggregates before it can be absorbed. The BioEnhanced® Na-RALA sodium salt form prevents this polymerisation, maintaining stability through the manufacturing process, storage, and digestion. This results in significantly higher bioavailability and a more predictable, consistent clinical effect compared to unstabilised R-ALA products.*
Yes. R-ALA has been extensively studied for its effects on glucose metabolism and insulin sensitivity. It activates GLUT4 glucose transporters and supports the enzyme systems that incorporate glucose into energy pathways. Clinical studies, particularly in Germany where R-ALA has been used as a prescription drug for nerve support for decades, demonstrate consistent improvements in glucose metabolism markers with regular supplementation.*
BioEnhanced Na-RALA provides 100mg of pure R-form ALA, which is functionally equivalent to approximately 200mg of standard racemic ALA. If you are also taking the 600mg standard ALA, your total functional ALA equivalent could be quite high. Consult your healthcare professional before combining ALA products, especially if you take diabetes medications, as very high ALA doses may affect blood glucose levels.
