Doctor's Best Pure L-Arginine provides pharmaceutical-grade L-arginine in a convenient, unflavoured powder format — the direct precursor to nitric oxide (NO), the molecule that relaxes and dilates blood vessels. L-arginine supplementation supports healthy cardiovascular function, blood pressure, blood flow to muscles and organs, and athletic performance by enhancing nitric oxide availability. GMP certified, non-GMO, vegan. 300g provides a generous 60-day supply at standard doses.
L-Arginine is the substrate for the enzyme eNOS (endothelial nitric oxide synthase) — the enzyme in blood vessel walls that produces nitric oxide (NO). NO signals the smooth muscle in blood vessel walls to relax, causing vasodilation — widening of the blood vessels. This reduces blood pressure, increases blood flow to tissues and organs, and improves circulation throughout the body. Without adequate arginine, eNOS cannot produce sufficient NO for healthy vascular function.
L-Citrulline is generally more effective than oral L-Arginine for raising plasma arginine levels and sustaining NO production. This is because oral L-arginine is substantially broken down in the gut and liver before reaching the bloodstream (first-pass metabolism), limiting bioavailability. L-Citrulline bypasses this and is converted to arginine in the kidneys. However, L-Arginine powder at higher doses can still provide meaningful NO support, particularly when taken on an empty stomach, and is a cost-effective option for many uses.
L-Arginine has clinical evidence for: mild to moderate hypertension (blood pressure reduction), erectile dysfunction (NO-mediated vasodilation in penile tissue), intermittent claudication (improved peripheral blood flow), athletic performance (delayed fatigue, improved power output), wound healing (arginine is a key substrate for tissue repair), and immune function (macrophage activation).
Take 3–6g (approximately 1–2 level teaspoons) dissolved in water, 30–60 minutes before exercise or before bed on an empty stomach. For cardiovascular support, 3–6g daily in divided doses. Start with a lower dose to assess tolerance — some people experience mild gastrointestinal discomfort at higher doses.
People with herpes simplex virus (HSV) should exercise caution — high-dose arginine can trigger herpes outbreaks as the virus uses arginine for replication (lysine competes with arginine and can be taken alongside to reduce this risk). Those taking blood pressure medications, nitrate drugs (for heart disease), or erectile dysfunction medications (PDE5 inhibitors) should consult their GP before supplementing — additive blood pressure lowering may occur.
