Otrivin Junior Nasal Spray is specially formulated for children with a lower concentration of xylometazoline (0.05%) compared to adult Otrivin (0.1%) — providing effective blocked nose relief that is dosed appropriately for children's smaller nasal passages and bodies. Xylometazoline is a nasal decongestant that acts directly on blood vessels in the nasal mucosa to reduce swelling and congestion, restoring easy breathing within minutes. Pharmacy Medicine. 10ml.
Xylometazoline is an alpha-adrenergic agonist — it binds to receptors on blood vessel walls in the nasal mucosa, causing them to constrict (vasoconstriction). This reduces the swelling of the nasal lining that causes congestion, opening the nasal passages within 2–5 minutes of application. The effect lasts up to 10 hours, making once or twice-daily dosing sufficient for most cold-related congestion.
Otrivin Junior (0.05%) is suitable for children aged 2–12 years. Children under 2 should not use nasal decongestant sprays without medical advice. Adult Otrivin (0.1%) should not be used for children under 12. Always follow the age and dose instructions on the label.
Apply 1 spray into each nostril up to 3 times daily. Do not exceed 3 applications per day. Do not use for more than 5 consecutive days — prolonged use of nasal decongestants can cause rebound congestion (rhinitis medicamentosa) where the nasal passages become more congested when the spray wears off.
Adult Otrivin contains 0.1% xylometazoline — twice the concentration of Otrivin Junior. Children's nasal passages are smaller and their nasal mucosa is more sensitive. The adult concentration may cause excessive vasoconstriction or systemic effects in children. Always use the age-appropriate formulation.
Yes. Otrivin Junior can safely be combined with oral antihistamines (cetirizine, loratadine) for hay fever — they work through different mechanisms. The nasal spray provides fast relief of congestion while the antihistamine addresses sneezing, itching, and runny nose. Do not use two nasal decongestant sprays simultaneously.
