Coco Scalp Ointment is a medicated scalp treatment containing coal tar and coconut oil for the management of dandruff, scalp psoriasis, seborrhoeic dermatitis and scalp eczema. Coal tar is one of the most established and clinically proven treatments for these scaly scalp conditions - reducing inflammation, slowing abnormal skin cell production and relieving itching.
Available from Pakuranga Pharmacy.
Coal tar works through multiple mechanisms. It slows the rapid overproduction of skin cells that causes scaling in psoriasis, reduces scalp inflammation, and has antifungal properties relevant to seborrhoeic dermatitis (where Malassezia yeast is a contributing factor). Its anti-proliferative effect on keratinocytes makes it particularly effective for the thick scaling seen in scalp psoriasis.
Apply to the affected scalp areas as directed on the label. Part the hair and apply directly to the scalp skin - not just the hair. Leave on for the directed time before washing out with shampoo. For best results, use regularly as directed. Some people apply at night and wash out in the morning. Avoid contact with eyes and non-affected skin areas.
Coal tar products can stain light-coloured hair, fabric and surfaces. Protect clothing and bedding when using overnight. Blonde or grey hair may temporarily pick up a darker tint from coal tar - this is temporary and washes out. If staining is a concern, apply carefully to the scalp only and wash out thoroughly after the directed contact time.
