Prospan Bronchial Syrup by Clinicians is a powerful herbal formula made from standardised dried ivy leaf extract (Hedera helix) — one of the most clinically studied herbal cough remedies available. Ivy leaf extract has demonstrated in multiple clinical trials to reduce productive cough frequency and severity, thin and loosen mucus (mucolytic effect), relax bronchial muscle spasm (bronchospasmolytic), and improve respiratory function. Suitable for adults and children over 12. 100ml menthol-flavoured syrup.
Ivy leaf (Hedera helix) contains saponins — particularly hederacoside C and alpha-hederin — that produce two key effects in the respiratory tract. First, a mucolytic effect: ivy saponins activate chloride channels in the airway epithelium, increasing fluid secretion that thins mucus and makes it easier to cough up. Second, a bronchospasmolytic effect: alpha-hederin relaxes smooth muscle in the bronchial walls, reducing bronchospasm and improving airflow. This dual mechanism addresses both the mucus congestion and the airway tightening components of productive cough.
Prospan Bronchial Syrup by Clinicians is indicated for adults and children over 12 years. For younger children, check with your pharmacist or GP — different Prospan formulations exist for children at different ages. Do not use cough suppressants in children under 2 without medical advice.
Prospan is specifically designed for productive (wet) coughs — where mucus is present in the airways and needs to be loosened and cleared. For dry, tickly, or irritant coughs without mucus, a different type of product (demulcent or cough suppressant) may be more appropriate. If you are unsure about your cough type, consult your pharmacist.
Clinical trials show meaningful improvement in cough frequency and respiratory symptoms within 7 days of consistent twice-daily use. Most people notice improved mucus clearance and reduced cough severity within 3–5 days. For acute bronchitis, a full course of 7–14 days is recommended.
Prospan can generally be combined with paracetamol, decongestants, and antihistamines for complete cold and flu symptom management. Do not combine with cough suppressants (codeine, dextromethorphan) — it is counterproductive to thin mucus and simultaneously suppress the cough reflex that clears it. If on prescription medications, check with your pharmacist.
