NOW Brewers Yeast is a genuine whole food nutritional supplement derived from Saccharomyces cerevisiae. Rich in B-complex vitamins, protein, chromium, and other trace minerals, it has been used for generations to support energy metabolism, blood sugar balance, skin health, and general nutrition. Unlike torula or nutritional yeast, brewers yeast has a naturally bitter taste — NOW's tablets make it easy to take without the flavour.
Brewers yeast is used as a whole food supplement providing B-vitamins, protein, chromium, and trace minerals. It is commonly used to support energy, blood sugar balance, skin health, and general nutrition.
Both are derived from Saccharomyces cerevisiae, but they differ in processing. Brewers yeast is a byproduct of beer brewing and is more bitter. Nutritional yeast is grown specifically as food and is often fortified with B12. Both provide B-vitamins and protein.
Brewers yeast contains chromium, which plays a role in insulin sensitivity and blood sugar regulation. Some research suggests chromium from brewers yeast may help support healthy blood glucose levels.
Brewers yeast is an inactive (non-living) yeast, so it does not cause yeast infections. However, people with yeast allergies or sensitivities should consult their healthcare provider before use.
Brewers yeast is commonly used by breastfeeding mothers to support milk production (galactagogue). While widely used for this purpose, consult your midwife or lactation consultant before starting any supplement while breastfeeding.
