Bisolvon Chesty Forte Liquid is the #1 selling chesty cough medicine in Australia, containing bromhexine hydrochloride — a clinically proven mucolytic that breaks down the molecular structure of mucus in the airways, making it thinner, less viscous, and easier to expectorate. Unlike simple cough suppressants, Bisolvon addresses the underlying problem — excessive thick mucus — by thinning it so the natural ciliary clearance mechanism can remove it effectively. Choc cherry flavour. 200ml bottle.
Bromhexine is a mucolytic (mucus-dissolving) agent that breaks down the disulphide bonds between mucin molecules in respiratory mucus. Mucin is the protein that gives mucus its thick, sticky, viscous character — by cleaving these bonds, bromhexine disrupts the mucin polymer network, reducing mucus viscosity dramatically. Thinner mucus is more effectively moved by the cilia (hair-like cells lining the airways) and easier to cough up, restoring normal airway clearance.
No — Bisolvon is specifically for productive (wet/chesty) coughs where thick mucus is present in the airways. For a dry, tickly, irritant cough with no mucus, a demulcent (honey-glycerin) or cough suppressant product is more appropriate. Using a mucolytic for a dry cough will not help and may worsen the sensation of needing to cough.
Bromhexine begins acting within 30–60 minutes. Meaningful improvement in mucus consistency and cough productivity is typically noticed within 1–3 days of twice-daily dosing. For best results, drink plenty of fluids alongside Bisolvon — adequate hydration thins mucus further and enhances the mucolytic effect.
Yes — Bisolvon can be taken alongside paracetamol, ibuprofen, nasal decongestants, and antihistamines. Do not combine with cough suppressants (codeine, dextromethorphan) — suppressing the cough reflex while using a mucolytic defeats the purpose of thinning the mucus for clearance. Expectorants (guaifenesin) can be combined as they complement mucolytic action.
Adults and children over 12: 10ml (one standard 10ml dose) three times daily. The standard bromhexine dose in Bisolvon Chesty Forte is 8mg per 5ml (16mg per 10ml dose). Take with food to reduce risk of stomach upset. Do not exceed recommended dose.
