USL Sport Instant Cold Packs are single-use chemical cold packs that activate instantly when the inner pouch is squeezed, providing immediate cold therapy for sports injuries without the need for a freezer or refrigerator. They are an essential component of any sports first aid kit — providing immediate RICE (Rest, Ice, Compression, Elevation) protocol ice for acute sprains, strains and bruises during matches and training sessions.
Box of 12 packs. Available from Pakuranga Pharmacy.
A: Instant cold packs contain two separate compartments — one containing water and one containing ammonium nitrate crystals. When the inner pouch is squeezed and broken, the water and ammonium nitrate mix, triggering an endothermic (heat-absorbing) chemical reaction that rapidly cools the pack. The pack typically reaches therapeutic cold temperatures within 30 seconds of activation.
A: USL Sport Instant Cold Packs typically remain cold for 15–20 minutes — enough for one standard ice application per the RICE protocol. Once the pack returns to room temperature, it cannot be reactivated. For multiple applications, use additional packs from the box.
A: Instant cold packs do not reach as low a temperature as regular ice, but they are sufficiently cold for first aid cryotherapy when applied correctly. Their key advantage is immediate availability without a freezer — critical for on-field and sideline use. For clinic cold therapy treatments, reusable gel packs (stored in the freezer) provide more consistent and economical cold therapy.
A: The chemicals inside instant cold packs (water and ammonium nitrate) are irritants and should not be ingested or come into contact with eyes or open wounds. If the pack leaks, remove from skin immediately, rinse thoroughly with water and seek medical advice if irritation persists. Keep away from children.
