The USL Sport GelMax Mouthguard for Youth provides dual protection for teeth and mouth during contact sports. The gel max formulation offers an enhanced fit and cushioning layer that reduces the risk of concussion compared to standard mouthguards — making it a popular choice for parents wanting extra protection for young athletes aged 8–14 years participating in rugby, hockey, martial arts and other contact sports.
Available from Pakuranga Pharmacy.
A: Boil water and allow to cool slightly (to approximately 70°C). Place the mouthguard in the water for 30 seconds until softened. Remove with a spoon, shake off excess water and place in the mouth. Bite down firmly and use your fingers and tongue to press the guard against your teeth and gums. Hold for 30 seconds then remove and place in cold water to set. Repeat if the fit is not correct.
A: Children should wear a mouthguard whenever playing contact sports, from the earliest age they participate. For primary school children (4–7 years), a junior-size mouthguard is available. For youth aged 8–14 years, the USL Sport GelMax Youth is the appropriate size. Mouthguard use is mandatory in many NZ junior rugby and hockey competitions.
A: Sports mouthguards should be replaced every season or whenever they show signs of wear, tearing or loss of shape. Children growing through the 8–14 year age range may need more frequent replacement as their jaw and teeth change. A poorly fitting mouthguard provides less protection and should be replaced promptly.
A: Yes — most boil-and-bite mouthguards including the GelMax can be trimmed with scissors along the back edge if the guard extends too far into the throat. Trim small amounts at a time and refit after each trim. Do not trim the front or sides as this reduces impact protection.
