The USL Sport GelMax Mouthguard Junior brings the enhanced dual protection of the GelMax gel cushioning to the youngest age group in contact sport — children aged 4–7 years. The junior size is specifically designed for the smaller jaw and mixed dentition (baby and emerging adult teeth) of young children, with the additional gel cushioning layer providing extra impact absorption beyond standard junior mouthguards.
Boil-and-bite with parental assistance for a customised fit. Available from Pakuranga Pharmacy.
A: The GelMax Junior's additional gel cushioning layer provides superior impact absorption compared to the standard junior mouthguard. For young children in contact sports, this enhanced protection can make a meaningful difference in reducing both dental injury risk and the forces transmitted to the jaw during impact. The price difference is modest for the additional protection offered.
A: Children can wear mouthguards from the time they start contact sports, typically from around 4–5 years of age. The Junior size is designed for this age group. Always ensure the mouthguard fits correctly — a poorly fitting guard may come loose during play and could be a choking hazard for very young children. Supervise young children closely when using mouthguards.
A: Children who are losing baby teeth and have a mix of baby and adult teeth present a fitting challenge for boil-and-bite mouthguards. The GelMax Junior can still be fitted, focusing on the adult teeth present. However, as the mouth changes rapidly during this age, mouthguards may need more frequent replacement or refitting than in older children with a stable dentition.
A: Yes — boil-and-bite mouthguards can typically be refitted by re-boiling and remoulding. Immerse in hot (not boiling) water until softened and repeat the fitting process. Most guards can be refitted 2–3 times before the material is too set to reshape effectively. Avoid overheating as this can degrade the gel cushioning layer.
