USL Sport Underwrap is a light foam pre-tape underwrap used to protect the skin before the application of rigid or elastic adhesive tape. Applying underwrap between the skin and tape significantly reduces the risk of tape-related skin irritation, blisters and breakdown — particularly important when strapping is applied repeatedly to the same area throughout a season.
The 7.5cm width and 27m roll provide excellent coverage and value for clinic and club use. Available from Pakuranga Pharmacy.
A: A thin layer of foam underwrap has minimal impact on the mechanical effectiveness of rigid strapping when applied correctly. The underwrap should be applied without overlap or creases — wrapping smoothly and thinly. The rigid tape is then applied over the underwrap with standard tension. The slight reduction in adhesion to the skin is more than compensated for by the skin protection benefits.
A: Typically 1–2 layers of underwrap is sufficient. Start from the anchor points (above and below the joint being strapped) and wrap smoothly without overlap or gaps. Too many layers can create bulk and reduce the effectiveness of the strapping — thinner is generally better.
A: Underwrap is not typically used with kinesiology tape as the adhesive on K-tape requires direct skin contact to activate properly and provide its therapeutic lift effect. Underwrap is most appropriate under rigid zinc oxide tape and EAB (elastic adhesive bandage).
A: Check the product label for latex content — latex sensitivity can cause reactions in some individuals. If you or your patients have known latex allergies, confirm the latex status of underwrap and tapes before use and look for specifically latex-free labelled products. Ask our pharmacist for guidance on latex-free sports tape products.
