Canesten Antifungal Cream contains clotrimazole 1% — a broad-spectrum antifungal agent that treats a wide range of fungal and yeast skin infections. Clotrimazole works by disrupting the cell membrane of fungi, killing the infection at its source and relieving the associated itching, burning and discomfort.
Canesten cream is a Pharmacist Only Medicine in New Zealand. Available in 20g and 50g tubes from Pakuranga Pharmacy.
A: Canesten Clotrimazole 1% Cream is effective against a wide range of fungal and yeast infections including vaginal thrush (external symptoms), ringworm (tinea corporis), athlete's foot (tinea pedis), jock itch (tinea cruris), pityriasis versicolor and other dermatophyte infections affecting the skin.
A: Apply a thin layer of cream to the affected area and gently rub in 2–3 times daily. Continue treatment for the full recommended course (typically 2–4 weeks for most infections) even if symptoms improve — stopping early can allow the infection to return. Wash hands before and after application.
A: Most people notice relief from itching and burning within a few days of starting treatment. However, visible improvement of the rash or infection may take 1–2 weeks, and the full treatment course should be completed. If there is no improvement after 4 weeks, consult your doctor or pharmacist as the diagnosis may need to be reviewed.
A: Canesten cream can be used during pregnancy for external fungal infections, but always consult your doctor or pharmacist first. For vaginal thrush during pregnancy, manual application without an applicator is recommended. Your pharmacist can advise on the safest use during pregnancy.
